Fixed Price vs. Hourly: How Dev Agencies Quote Projects

How development agencies quote fixed-price and hourly work, what founders should look out for, and when each model protects your budget.

Topic focus: fixed-price web development agency

When founders compare a fixed-price web development agency with hourly teams, they often look only at the price. The real difference is who pays when the project meets a problem halfway through.

一How hourly quotes work

With hourly billing (also called time and materials), the agency estimates a range and then charges for the hours it uses. That is fair for research work, where finding the answer is the product. It is risky when you need a launch date and a maximum cost. Without strict control of the task list, "two months" becomes four, and you find out from the invoices.

二How fixed-price quotes work

A fixed price needs a clear scope, written assumptions, and a process for changes. Good agencies include the risk of unknown problems in the price. The best agencies also write down what is not included. This model rewards clear thinking, because both sides want to decide fast and deliver the agreed work.

三When to use each model

Choose hourly for experimental prototypes, unclear technical questions, or ongoing work where priorities change every week. Choose a fixed price for MVP sprints, marketing sites with known sections, and packages such as "MVP in 7 days" or "AI integration into an existing app".

四Tricks that make either model cost more

Look out for planning fees that never produce a plan you can build. Look out for "estimated" fixed prices that change every week. And look out for hourly teams that use junior developers but charge senior rates. Ask for the names of the people on your project. Ask how they price change requests. Ask what you own on the first day after you pay.

五Our preference

We prefer fixed prices for our packages. Non-technical founders need a number they can show to a co-founder or an investor. We agree on the scope before the work starts, and our daily updates keep surprises small. If you want a price you can plan around, see our MVP Sprint pricing or book a free call.
